Due to the growing concern of COVID-19 outbreak, we had to make the difficult decision of postponing SWARM 2020. However, we are going ahead with the other preparation, and a new date will be announced soon.

Due to several requests received from prospective authors and shutdown of institutions due to COVID-19, SWARM 2020 paper submission deadline is extended till March 31, 2020

Welcome to the International Conference on Sustainable Water  Resources Management (SWARM 2020)!

UPDATE

About the Conference

The rapid growth of the population on the earth's surface is forcing industrialization and urbanization. In developing countries, the process of urbanization is more often unplanned and disorganized, resulting in various hazards due to ecological imbalance. The rapid industrialization and urbanization, in turn, have also led to conversion of forest area to agricultural/urban area, filling up of low-lying areas to meet the resource need to support the increased population. Unprecedented natural calamities like devastating flood, riverbank erosion, surface erosion, and landslide can be regarded as manifestation of nature's reaction to restore the balance. The increased emission of greenhouse gases due to industrialization and the continuation of unscientific agricultural practice in many parts of the world have led to climate change. Accelerated change in climate is expected to have a major impact on the future sustainability of the earth. On the other hand, the increase in population has reduced the per capita availability of water which resulted in unplanned exploitation of both surface water and groundwater. Due to overexploitation, groundwater has been depleted in many parts of the world. As a result, it becomes uneconomical to withdraw groundwater from aquifers. The overexploitation of groundwater may also contaminate the aquifer.

This conference, hence, is being organized to provide a platform for discussion among various relevant disciplines so that some meaningful, practical strategies can be evolved towards achieving the goal for sustainable management of water resources of the globe.

The conference has been organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, Assam Engineering College in association with the Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati.

Objectives of the Conference

  • To identify the specific issues that need to be tackled for sustainable management of water. The challenges related to modeling and management of various aspects of water will be identified, and a goal will be set to resolve the issue within a specific time frame.

  • To discuss the impact, resiliency, and risks arising from the hazard created by the extreme precipitation, flood including urban flooding, river and catchments erosion, the water quality of both surface water and groundwater, water logging and drought, dams, climate change, etc.

  • To provide a platform for the academic, practicing, and industrial community to share the latest findings in their respective fields as well as to share the information about the difficulties faced by them in solving various water-related problems. The interaction between the academic and the practicing engineers will help in reducing the knowledge gap between the theoretical advances and practical applications, also help in understanding the problem faced by the industry. This conference will also provide a platform to exchange knowledge between the national and international researchers, which will certainly boost the academic and professional collaboration between the researchers.

  • To foster participation and dialogue between various stakeholders, including governments, scientific and academic communities, in order to promote sustainable policies for water management, create awareness of water-related problems, motivate commitment at the highest level for their solution and thus promote better management of water resources at local, regional, national and international levels.

About the Institute

Assam Engineering College (AEC) is the first engineering college in the north-eastern India and a premier technical institute of the entire country. The College has a total campus area of around 400 acres and is located in the Jalukbari area of Guwahati city. AEC is affiliated to Gauhati University which was established in the year 1948. It is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). It offers Bachelor of Engineering (BE) courses in 8 different engineering disciplines. It also offers Masters of Engineering/ Technology (ME/ MTech) courses on selected specializations and Master in Computer Application (MCA) course. All the departments are having research facility and offer PhD programs. AEC has been the hub of many academic and supplementary activities in Assam for almost six decades. The college is an example of cultural unity with students drawn from the different states in the country. Apart from this, the campus provides ample opportunities for developing extracurricular skills which include EDC, NCC, NSS, social, cultural and sports clubs. The Alumni of this institution have excelled in various spheres and are positioned very well globally in many leading government, public-sector and private organizations.

Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IITG) is one of the leading institutes of technology and excellence in India. It was established in 1994. At present the Institute has eleven departments and three inter-disciplinary academic centres covering all the major engineering, science and humanities disciplines. IIT Guwahati has the world class infrastructure for carrying out advanced research and has been equipped with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering instruments. Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati's campus is on a sprawling 285 hectares plot of land on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra around 20 kms from the heart of the Guwahati city.

About the Department

The Department of Civil Engineering, Assam Engineering College established in 1955, was the first branch introduced in this college. The initial journey was concentrated toward setting up the UG program (B.E. in Civil Engineering) followed by M.E. programs in two specializations. The Department has also been offering Doctoral degree in various fields of civil engineering since 1993. The department undertakes sponsored research and industrial consultancy on behalf of government, PSU and private sector organisations of repute. It has also been training people from government organizations, academic institutions, other private organizations and industries.

The Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Guwahati has been consistently working for addressing various Civil Engineering issues of the country and is considered as the pioneer in the region. The department is involved in research and consultancy projects sponsored by various governmental agencies and companies from the country and abroad.

About TEQIP

TEQIP conceived in pursuance of the NPE-1986 (revised in 1992) by Govt. of India as a long term program to be implemented in different phases. After successful execution of TEQIP II, TEQIP III starts from 2017-18 as Central Sector Scheme with a focus on the Low Income States, Northeast, Hill States and Islands. The third phase of TEQIP is also special in a way that it incorporates twinning arrangements between mentee & mentor institutions with an emphasis on Focused Training (PT) and Focused Interventions from IITs in terms of deliverables and accountability. KIT, established at IIT Guwahati under 2nd phase of TEQIP is a focal point for training Faculty, Staff and students from TEQIP-III institutions in Knowledge Engineering, Content Creation, Improving Teaching, Pedagogy & administrative skills in identified niche areas/disciplines.
