Overview

We encounter intellectual property at every step of our lives today. From the design on the machines to the titles, paints, books, films, the music CDs, in fact each and everything by which we are surrounded falls under some kind of intellectual property. The concept of Intellectual Property (IP) will be understood better if we understand what is meant by the term property. Property actually means some material object belonging to a particular person. Speaking legally property refers to the bundle of rights that the law confers on a person by virtue of the ownership and possession of an object. Intellectual Property on the other hand implies to any property created by the application of human mind. It is nonphysical (intangible) and it derives its value from idea(s). There is no uniform definition of Intellectual Property. The domain of IP is expanding fast as knowledge and information became key drivers of techno-economic growth and of societal progress in general. Intellectual Property as we understand refers to the creations of mind: invention, literacy and artistic works, and symbols, names, images and designs used in commerce.
The present-day scenario indicates less man power for patent scouting throughout India. The patent agents and innovators have almost no experience about patent writing as there is no formal education or awareness among the population of students, researchers and innovators.
Thus, this becomes the main reason for the intellectual properties go noticed in research institutions and organizations thereby leading to less filings of patents. Patent is the most significant form of IP to encourage creativity in science and technology and protect invention and innovation from appropriation by others. It is a strategic tool for economic growth facilitating FDI and technology transfer, stimulating R&D and for the creation of new technologies and businesses, empowering enterprises, along with trademarks expanding businesses globally.
It is thus, very much essential for a formal education or a course curriculum to be envisaged in order to encourage and train students and young researchers to understand the depths of intellectual property and how they can register their innovation and invention to get recognition and appreciation for their hard work. The design and structure of the proposed course focuses on creating an awareness among the teachers of TEQIP mapped institutions about filing of their research works and innovations for patents and thereby gain admiration and royalty on behalf of it. The modern-day advancement in innovation and research urges the development of such a course curriculum which not only encourages the teachers of TEQIP mapped institutions towards research and innovation but also educates them to get recognition from their intellectual property in a legal and subtle manner.
